New vinyl just arrived today. The top picture shows two pieces from the Zoology line and the bottom group includes Dr. Seuss pieces and coordinates (with a close-up of one of the Seuss patterns). These are easy to work with....they make great tote bags, diaper bags, are suitable for some purse patterns, and of course can be used for table coverings, etc. There are also new Dr. Seuss flannels that would make a very cuddly quilt for the little Seuss fans in your life.

A recent disappointment for us here at Creekside Quilting. Last week a small wool sample went missing. Samples are on loan from either the staff or customers who allow us to showcase their quilts or needlework. If, once you got home, you found this sample tucked in among your items, please return it to the shop so we can get it back to it's rightful owner. The sample was a cute table mat from the Primitive Gatherings pattern "Squared Up Table Mat" which is shown to the right.

Barb Dickerson has issued a challenge to collect toilet paper through the month of February for the Food Bank of Iowa. Barb hopes to collect 10,000 rolls and Creekside Quilting will act as a collection point. Twirl Kit

Another new sample! About a week ago I blogged about new fabric from Moda -- Twirl. Well, today we have a new sample using the Twirl fabric. The kit is put together by Moda and comes with everything you need for the top and binding. SERGER CLEARANCE We have two sergers that have been discontinued and they need a home. One is marked down to $299 (70% off the MSRP) and the other to $599 (75% off the MSRP). These are feature-rich machines at an unbeatable price. They're being sold as "gently used" because of the length of time we had them on the floor, so there's no warranty, free lessons, or free first cleaning. They do, however, include all parts and the user manual. There's less than 10 hours use on either of them. If you've been thinking about a serger, you really should consider these. Hurry, we hope they go fast!

We thought you'd like to see two of this week's "show and tell" quilts. They couldn't be more different from each other, but each is definitely a winner! Lonie made the orange and black quilt from a pattern by local quilt artist Eileen Bartos. The shading is spectacular!

Ruth made this "creature quilt" for her 1-year-old grandson and named it "Henry's Galaxy." I bet he'll LOVE it! It is perfect for a little boy, isn't it? The colors are so bright and happy, and the creatures are adorable!

We don't always have our camera at the ready, and you know we're not as good as we'd like to be about blogging regularly.....but we ALWAYS love to see your quilts!

Fabric!

It's January....a month when we typically receive a lot of fabric, and it has started! Good thing we like our UPS man, because we'll be seeing him frequently this month. Two groups arrived yesterday. The blue and yellow group is "Summer Breeze II" by Sentimental Studios (Moda). The smaller red and black group is "Vivaldi" (Windham). Both are beautiful....time to sew!!

UPS was very, very good to us yesterday. In addition to the much-awaited "Blueberry Crumb Cake" (above, showing all bolts and a close-up of the large-scale floral in one of the four colorways), he brought us new flannels, new batiks, and new reproduction prints. He also brought the TUTTO rolling bag for machines, available in four colors and four sizes. If taking your machine to class or retreat is a struggle, put this bag on your wish list! It has pockets for other "stuff" like fabric, tools, power cords, etc., and opens from both the top and the front, so packing up couldn't be easier.

The class will guide you through the process of wrapping the clothesline with fabric strips and sewing those together to form a bowl. By the end of class you should have a bowl made and ready to go. Our newest sample is from the pattern "Drama Queen" by Brown Tiger Design (aka Ginny, one of our own). The beauty hanging in the store is 62" x 74" but the pattern ($8.00) includes two other sizes. We'll have kits available later this week. If Oriental prints aren't your thing, it would be fun to do this in contemporary fabrics or traditional florals. I have a growing collection of Kaffe Fassets prints at home that I've been itching to cut but hadn't decided what to do with them. This might be my answer! Sorry, the photographer (that's me!) wasn't able to get the whole quilt in the frame so the bottom border is missing from this picture.

We've been away from the blog for a couple weeks in preparation for the big quilt fest held in Des Moines last week. What fun we had meeting new friends and seeing visitors from last year again. Dogwood Trail

A portion of the proceeds from Moda's current "Collection For a Cause" group will be donated to the AQS museum in Paducah, KY. If you've ever been on the Dogwood Trail tour during the quilt show in Paducah, this fabric will evoke beautiful memories. We have a sample table runner coming soon.

Tinsel Tree

Robert Kaufman's group of Christmas prints features candy canes, Christmas trees, and reindeer in traditional Christmas reds and greens....and some pink for good measure!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Our Christmas in July sale is tomorrow, Saturday, July 30, so we've been busy sewing new samples and getting our Christmas displays done. The FaLaLa quilt in the background of this picture is from the book "Jingle All the Way" by Art to Heart. It's a winner....and our kit includes the jingle bells. We also love the "Hope Joy Peace" pillowcase...and it seems you do, too, because we keep selling out. The last time we ordered more fabric we were told "You can have the last 27 yards and then it's gone"

comes this new quilt "Charming Patches Lap Quilt." It's made with two charm packs from the Jovial collection by Moda.....but would be great in just about anything. Quick, easy, and interesting, it uses every charm square and a little yardage for sashing and borders.

We received a new line of fabrics in the shop this week by Sandy Gervais called "Grand Finale". It comes with a wonderful fall panel and a pattern to make the panel into a 40" x 52" wall hanging. Charm packs were also included in the shipment. Is it time to start thinking of fall already?!

Another new line this week is "Grace" by 3 Sisters. Lovely florals in reds, browns and greens. BEAUTIFUL! They will be great for a Christmas project but don't limit them to just Christmas.

Well, we're still working on our product demonstration videos. I have to tell you, it's been a barrel of laughs! I've never seen anyone who looks as riduclous in front of a camera as I do, but when duty calls what else can you do? Anyway, here's a little clip of something I am very excited about. And by the way, when I refer to 14 degrees, I really should have said "temperatures 14 degrees or colder." We thought about re-filming, but by the time we got this take we were pretty convinced that "perfect" was WAY out of our reach.

We are now carrying the Imaginisce i-top Button Maker tool. I used it last night to put the finishing touches on a 3-D flower for a small quilt. Soooo much easier than the old method of covering a button. Wouldn't a large flower be cute on a tote bag. The tool is $29.99 and we carry brads, buttons and badges in three sizes (16mm, 22mm, and 28mm). We've also ordered the bobby pins so that you can make hair ornaments for your little darlings. Clothesline Tote!

Some of you readers will be saying... "FINALLY". Well, I have to be honest, my friend Pat did the sewing of this tote. I wrapped, she sewed -- great teamwork. Thank you, Pat! Sue brought in a beautiful show and tell to the shop on Tuesday and I want to share it with you. The photo does not do justice to the quilt! Notice the brooches? Every flower head, butterfly, bug and even a lizard are brooches. Makes me wish I had saved more of Grandma's costume jewelry. Thanks, Sue...it was wonderful to see in person.

ConKerr Cancer Pillowcases

I had the honor of meeting Brenda Cummer today at the shop. She is a representative with ConKerr Cancer and was in picking up the latest batch of pillowcases. In our conversation the number 1,200 came up...she has delivered over 1,200 pillowcases to various institutions as Blank Children's Hospital, Children's Cancer Connection, U of IA Children's Hospital as well as Ronald McDonald Houses in Des Moines and Iowa City. Thanks to all who have participated in making pillowcases in the past and a reminder that this will be ongoing here at Creekside. Barb

Just One Star

Have you heard about Moda's Just One Star challenge? If not, check it out on Moda's Just One Star webpage. We're collecting blocks that we'll mail to Moda. They need to be to us by 5:30 Monday, April 25 so that they reach Moda by the May 1 deadline. The word went out in our newsletter last Thursday, and we've collected six blocks so far. I'm hoping we'll gather at least 100; we'll keep you posted on our progress! Hope you can help...making just one star is a small token of appreciation to those who serve our country, but when that one star is set into a quilt, imagine the impact it will have on the recipient.

Shelby, aged 11, invited friends to join her in making pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer. Together they completed 41 delightful pillowcases! It was so much fun to hear her talk about the various fabrics she used....which she liked, which she didn't, which pillowcases she thought should go to different age groups, etc. She's an amazing girl! Hello again! After a trip back to Wisconsin for Christmas, inventory, and other year-end "stuff," I'm back live on the blog! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that you're now finding time again to hunker down in front of your sewing machine. It's a good place to be, isn't it?

We're so excited about the new book by our local artist and friend, Dr. Deb Kimball. In International Sue, Deb has taken Sunbonnet Sue on a world-wide journey. Each of 49 unique Sue's is dressed in the style of her country. They're all wonderful! This book belongs in the library of anyone who has ever admired Sunbonnet Sue. It's bound to be a popular book, so call us if you want one held for you.

We received this message and picture and just had to share it! Kelli graciously allowed us to post the picture of her gorgeous quilt and the message that tells about how it came to be. I hope she'll bring it in sometime so I can see it in person. Her email to us is below the picture. What a husband, huh? I remember him, two years later, because I was so sure he was going to lose patience as we "auditioned" fabrics. My anxiety was for naght, because he remained interested the whole time.

Two years ago he went into Creekside with a pattern for this quilt to pick out fabric for me for Christmas. I really appreciated all the time and effort that went into that Chrismas gift to me. I want to thank you and your staff and the attention they gave him. I loved the gift and I love the result. It was a fun project that your store had a huge part in. Creekside is a wonderful store and it is because of your staff.

We've Lost a Friend

We received sad news today about one of our quilting friends. Many of you in the Des Moines area probably knew Mary Lou Gille, who passed away last night. She was a prolific quilter with a special love for applique, and belonged to several of the local applique groups. Several years ago, she suffered an injury which ultimately caused her to lose a leg, but she never lost her love for quilting and quilters.

Mary Lou and her husband moved to Texas earlier this fall. A couple of weeks ago, we heard she was in the hospital, but we didn't expect this outcome. As of right now, we don't have any other details but thought those of you who knew her would want to know of her death. Please keep her husband, Larry, and her children in your prayers.

If you love batiks, you may have noticed that our batik section was getting a little bare. All of the companies that sell batiks to us have said the same thing: "It's the rainy season, and the goods have been delayed." Well, it must have dried up because we have received about 75 bolts of beautiful new batiks this week!

Bitsy Chick Display

Every year during the quilt show, members of the Bitsy Chicks small group display their favorite quilts in a special exhibit. The Bitsy Chicks, if you're not familiar with them, is a group of local quilters who make a miniature quilt each quarter, following a challenge theme determined by one member of the group. Their work is incredible, and we are so fortunate that they're willing to share their work in this way. You really have to see this 50-quilt exhibit to appreciate it, but here are some "teaser" pictures.

Quilt Show Week!

Applique Group

I wish you had been here to see the quilts brought to last Thursday's meeting of Angela's applique group. Every single one of these quilters does a beautiful job with applique....as witnessed by the many, many ribbons they've won! Thanks to all of them for sharing!

Now the sad part of this story. I have a new camera, which of course means new picture software. In the process of uploading these pictures and learning the software, I managed to completely lose about six or eight other photos. I'm sure they're on my computer somewhere, but finding them and getting them back into the albums has so far proven more than I can figure out! So to the other appliquers: I'm sorry! I'll catch one of your quilts another time. (Hopefully, I'll get better at this.) And to wrap up this post, here are two of the quilts shown that day but photographed without the maker in the picture.

This one by Jan didn't want to stay up on the design while it was being photographed. I think it wanted to come home with me?? I love the graceful birds!

Make a Pillowcase

ConKerr Cancer is a program that collects and distributes cheerful pillowcases to children hospitalized for the treatment of cancer or another serious disease. We hope you'll help by making a pillowcase and bringing it to Creekside Quilting. I made mine this weekend; it took just 40 minutes and was so much fun I'll probably make another. You can pick either up our pattern or a ConKerr Cancer brochure with their pattern at the store. Naturally, you can also use any other pattern you want! The completed pillowcase should be washed (some of the children may have weakened immune systems) and placed in a quart-size ziplock baggie. Thanks so much....you'll brighten a sick child's day!
